Indonesia has replaced India as the country recording the second highest number of daily Covid-19 cases in the world after Brazil, with infections spiralling in the southeast Asian country by 45% over the last seven days, reports
In the seven days ending Wednesday, Indonesia recorded over 2.9 lakh new cases of the coronavirus, overtaking India’s tally of nearly 2.8 lakh, as per the worldometers.info website. India’s seven-day case count had fallen by 7% as compared with the preceding week.
With cases rising sharply due to variants, Indonesia looked set to overtake Brazil as the nation reporting the highest number of new cases. Brazil had logged just over 3 lakh cases in the past seven days, a fall of 14% over the earlier week. Globally, cases have been on the rise since June 21, when the seven-day average of daily cases stood at almost 3.9 lakh. By Wednesday (July 14), the global seven-day average had risen to just over 4.7 lakh, according to worldometers.info.
Meanwhile, the seven-day average of daily cases in India fell below the 40,000-mark for the first time since March 22. While cases continue to decline in the country, the rate of fall has slowed considerably over the past two weeks. It took 18 days for the average to fall from 50,000 to below 40,000. The preceding drop of 10,000 cases had taken just one week.
On Thursday, India reported 39,217 new cases, down from 41,816 reported on the previous day. Kerala (13,773 new cases) and some states of the northeast, such as Manipur (1,039), Arunachal Pradesh (465) and Mizoram (581), continued to record a spike in cases.
However, Maharashtra showed signs of a drop in infections, with 8,010 fresh cases on Thursday, a drop of more than 1,000 as compared to the count last Thursday (9,114).
However, the state, like Kerala, continued to record more new cases than recoveries. Cases were now falling more steadily in Odisha and Assam, the two other states where infections were declining at a very slow pace till recently.
