NEW DELHI: Calcutta high court on Wednesday admitted West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s petition, challenging the election of BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari from Nandigram in assembly polls.
The high court directed the Election Commission to preserve all records related to Nandigram polls. The court said notice be served upon Adhikari and other parties in the matter.
Mamata Banerjee and her aide-turned-rival Suvendu Adhikari, who quit the Trinamool Congress to join the BJP ahead of the assembly elections, were locked in a high-voltage electoral battle in Nandigram.
Suvendu won the election by a margin of around 2000 votes. However, Mamata had alleged that her requests for recount were turned down by the election official.
Justice Shampa Sarkar directed that Banerjee’s election petition will be taken up for hearing on August 12.
