NEW DELHI: For the first time since she defeated BJP with a thumping majority in the West Bengal assembly elections in May, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee will be making her first move to reach out to people beyond the state, on July 21.
The day is commemorated as Martyr’s Day by TMC as the party’s biggest annual political programme since its inception in 1998, to remember the 13 people who were killed in police firing in Kolkata during a Youth Congress rally in 1993, led by Banerjee who then led the Youth Congress wing in the state.
Banerjee will also be coming to Delhi for the first time since taking over as chief minister for the third term in May. She will be in Delhi for five days during the Monsoon Session of Parliament, from July 25 to 30. During her stay here, the Bengal chief minister plans to meet with leaders of other parties and make her presence felt in the national Capital in an effort to reach out beyond Bengal, with an eye on the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. The TMC chief is clearly gearing up to play a role at the national level.
TMC is likely to be the fulcrum for the anti-BJP opposition parties to come together in Parliament during the upcoming monsoon session that starts from July 19.
Banerjee’s July 21 speech will be delivered virtually through large video screens, as the corona pandemic has prevented a rally on the ground, but for the first time it will be addressed to people beyond the state – in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Tripura, Assam and some others — with an eye on the 2024 Lok Sabha polls when the TMC chief hopes to play a role at the national level.
The high-pitched battle for Bengal last March-April had turned the campaign for the assembly polls in the state into a (Narendra) Modi versus Mamata (Banerjee) match.
That had also seen other opposition leaders from different states coming out in her support during the elections to campaign against BJP. Since her victory over BJP, the TMC chief has been hailed as a significant opposition leader, who could take on the ruling BJP at the Centre.
TMC has planned to set up giant screens outside the TMC offices in some states including Uttar Pradesh and Tripura to beam Mamata Banerjee’s address.
“This time, the event will be screened on giant screens at TMC’s office in Delhi. Our party MPs will be present there as Parliament session will begin on July 19. Our party supporters in Delhi will campaign in Delhi, highlighting the event,” said Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy.
“Everyone in India knows that Mamata Banerjee stands for development and people want to hear her as everyone is aware that she is the only one who can defeat BJP,” said senior Lok Sabha MP Saugata Roy.
