Learning from Indian Football’s Experienced Coaches: Avijit Ghosh Joins Pune Pioneers FC
Former East Bengal and Royal Wahingdoh goalkeeper Avijit Ghosh brings experience from playing under established Indian and international coaches as he takes up a new role with Pune Pioneers FC.
A footballer’s education does not end when training finishes. Some of the most valuable lessons come from the coaches they work under, the environments they experience and the standards they encounter throughout their careers.
For Avijit Ghosh, years spent in professional football provided opportunities to learn under several recognised figures in the Indian game. Now appointed Goalkeeping Coach at Pune Pioneers FC, the former professional goalkeeper begins a new chapter in which his own experiences can contribute to the development of younger players.
During his playing career, Ghosh worked under coaches including Subhash Bhowmick, Bimal Ghosh, Santosh Kashyap, Godfrey Pereira and Philippe De Ridder. Their different backgrounds and football experiences formed part of his journey through Indian professional football.
Exposure to different football environments
Ghosh’s playing career included clubs across different levels of Indian football. After representing Site Athletic Club, SAIL Football Club and George Telegraph, he spent four years at Tata Football Academy between 2003 and 2007.
He subsequently moved into senior football, representing East Bengal FC in the 2008–09 and 2009–10 seasons. His career also included Air India FC, Mumbai Tigers, Sreebhumi Samiti, Aryan FC and Royal Wahingdoh FC.
These experiences placed him in different competitive environments, from Kolkata’s demanding club football structure to the national I-League.
At East Bengal, he was part of the squad that won the Federation Cup in 2009–10 and the Calcutta Football League Premier Division in 2010. He also participated in the AFC Cup in 2010.
With Royal Wahingdoh, he was part of the team that finished third in the 2014–15 I-League season.
Working under experienced coaches during these stages of his career gave Ghosh exposure to different approaches to managing teams and preparing players for competition.
From absorbing knowledge to sharing experience
The transition from player to coach requires a change in perspective.
As a player, the primary responsibility is to perform within the team’s structure. As a coach, the responsibility shifts towards helping others understand the game, develop their abilities and improve their performance.
For a specialist goalkeeper coach, this transition is particularly significant. The role requires an understanding of the demands placed on goalkeepers and the ability to guide players as they progress through different stages of development.
Ghosh began his coaching journey in 2017, taking his experience into a series of football environments across West Bengal.
His assignments included Hooghly District Sports Association, Kalyani Football League and Kolkata Soccer Academy. He subsequently worked with Suruchi Sangha, Khidderpore SC, Kalighat MS, City AC and George Telegraph FC.
In 2026, he was also associated with SKM Sports Foundation in the AIFF U-17 Youth League.
He holds an AIFF C Coaching Licence.
A specialist role in youth development
The appointment at Pune Pioneers FC gives Ghosh responsibility for goalkeeper development across all age groups.
The club operates a residential academy in Wagholi as well as a non-residential evening academy programme. His role will cover players from both pathways, placing specialist goalkeeping coaching within the wider academy structure.
For young players, access to coaches with professional playing backgrounds can offer valuable insight into the demands of competitive football. However, the real measure of a coach’s contribution lies in how effectively that experience is translated into the development of players.
The early response to Ghosh’s sessions has been positive. Players have responded well, while fellow coaches have observed encouraging improvements in the goalkeepers’ work.
A new chapter in Pune
Ghosh’s appointment also marks a new professional chapter outside his familiar Kolkata football environment. Having relocated to Pune, he now joins a club looking to strengthen its specialist coaching structure.
His career has taken him from youth football and Tata Football Academy to professional clubs, national competitions and coaching assignments across multiple levels.
The opportunity at Pune Pioneers FC brings these experiences together in a new setting.
For the club, the appointment adds a specialist with a playing background shaped by established coaches and competitive environments. For Ghosh, it provides an opportunity to pass on his knowledge and contribute to the progress of young goalkeepers.
The lessons acquired throughout a playing career can become even more valuable when they are shared with the next generation. At Pune Pioneers FC, Ghosh now has the opportunity to make that transition an important part of his coaching journey.
