India pips US as top source of government information requests: Twitter | India News

NEW DELHI: India is the single largest source of government information requests, accounting for 25% of the global volume and 15% of the global accounts specified, social media company Twitter’s latest transparency report released on Wednesday, said. India replaces US at the top slot, which now accounts for the second highest volume of information requests comprising 22% of global information requests.
Between January and June 2020, US was on top, while India was Number 2, with 21% of the global information requests and nearly 25% of global accounts specified. The volume of government information requests from India, however, swelled between July 1 and December 31, 2020. Requests for account information from India, Twitter said, jumped 258%, while the number of accounts specified grew by 120% between July and December 2020, most of them pertaining to the Delhi riots and the pandemic. The report also said India is now among the Top 5 in the world pushing legal demands for taking down content along with Japan, Russia, Turkey, and South Korea. India alone accounts for 18% of global legal demands.
