NEW DELHI: India has a place of pride on the world map because of the Border Security Force (BSF) and other paramilitary forces, said Union home minister Amit Shah at the 18th Investiture ceremony of the BSF on Saturday.
“I salute those who have made supreme sacrifice. These bravehearts & warriors cannot be forgotten. India is strengthening its position, and has a place of pride on the world map due to BSF & our paramilitary forces who are protecting borders,” news agency ANI quoted Shah as saying.
In his address, Shah lauded those who had made the ‘supreme sacrifice’ for the country.
“Border security is national security. We have many challenges. I have complete faith in our paramilitary forces. Under PM Modi, we have an independent defense policy, which warned those challenging our sovereignty of response in the same language,” he said.
Amit Shah also spoke about the key role played by the BSF in stopping human rights violations in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh).
“In erstwhile east Pakistan, human rights were being abused. Women were being tortured. BSF troops played a crucial role and now Bangladesh is an independent nation. BSF founder Khusro Faramurz Rustamji) oversaw the operation.” he said.
Shah said that the issue of border security was pushed forward when Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s govt was formed.
“For a long time, there were no discussions on border safety due to some priorities. When Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s govt was formed, the issue was pushed forward.”
According to a statement issued by the BSF, 27 BSF personnel are being awarded including 14 police medals for gallantry and 13 police medals for meritorious services.
“The Investiture ceremony of BSF is being celebrated since 2003 in the memory of the first Director-General, Padma Vibhushan KF Rustamji, the legendary and one of modern India’s most celebrated Police Officer popularly known as the Founding Father of the BSF,” the BSF said in the statement.
