Gurumaa Yogita Khatri: 27 Years of Leadership, Naturopathy and Preventive Healthcare
From 1999 to the present, Gurumaa Yogita Khatri's professional journey has been shaped by persistence, naturopathy, social service and a sustained belief that better health begins with greater awareness of how we live.
A person rarely walks into a wellness centre carrying only a health complaint. Behind it may be years of irregular meals, long working hours, inadequate sleep, family responsibilities or stress that has gradually become part of everyday life. Sometimes, it is simply the realisation that something about one's lifestyle needs to change.
For Gurumaa Yogita Khatri, listening to such concerns has been part of a professional life that began in 1999 and has now spanned 27 years.
Entering a Field Without Public Visibility
When she entered the field of naturopathy, the subject did not have the public visibility it has today. Conversations around preventive healthcare, lifestyle diseases, nutrition, yoga and natural healing were not as prominent in ordinary Indian households at the time. Working in naturopathy therefore involved more than professional practice. It required patience, communication and the gradual process of earning people's trust.
Khatri stayed with that work. Over the years, her professional practice expanded across naturopathy, yoga, meditation, nutrition guidance, hydrotherapy, mud therapy, physiotherapy and lifestyle improvement programmes, with the underlying focus remaining on helping people understand the everyday factors that can influence their wellbeing.
A Message Rooted in Everyday Indian Life
That message carries particular relevance in Indian family life. The office-goer who spends hours commuting and eats dinner late, the parent who postpones personal health while managing the family, the older adult living with long-standing lifestyle concerns, or the younger person spending much of the day sitting and looking at a screen, all face different circumstances. Yet each reflects the growing importance of preventive health awareness across generations.
For Khatri, this is where naturopathy and wellness conversations become meaningful, addressing not a single ailment but the broader pattern of habits that shape long-term health.
From Individual Practice to Institution-Building
As the Founder and Director of Nirvana Naturopathy & Retreat, Igatpuri, Nashik, she gradually moved from individual professional practice towards institution-building. Creating a long-term wellness institution brought responsibilities beyond consultations and programmes: developing a team, maintaining standards, understanding people's expectations and building an organisation capable of sustaining its work over time.
A Widening Social Dimension
Her professional journey also developed a strong social dimension. Naturopathy awareness initiatives and free healthcare and wellness activities became part of her wider engagement. Figures associated with her work indicate that around six lakh people have been reached through naturopathy awareness initiatives, while approximately 4.5 lakh people have benefited from free healthcare and wellness initiatives. Nirvana has also generated around 200 local employment opportunities over more than 12 years.
These figures offer one measure of reach. The less visible work is creating awareness itself. Changing health behaviour is rarely achieved through a single conversation. People may understand the value of better nutrition, adequate sleep, physical activity and stress management, yet incorporating these habits consistently into daily life can be difficult, which is why Khatri's approach has remained centred on preventive health, lifestyle awareness and wellness support, without presenting naturopathy as a replacement for appropriate medical diagnosis or evidence-based treatment.
Expanding Professional Responsibilities
Her professional responsibilities have expanded alongside this work. She is a Yoga and Naturopathy professional, motivational speaker and social wellness advocate, a member of the Central Council for Research in Yoga & Naturopathy (CCRYN) under the Ministry of AYUSH, and a Trustee of Life Care & Peace Mission.
Recognition has followed over time. Nirvana Naturopathy & Retreat has received AYUSH certification and NABH accreditation, and in 2026, the institution received the National Excellence in Naturopathy and Preventive Wellness Award at the ET Now Business Conclave & Awards.
What the Awards Do Not Fully Capture
But awards tell only part of a 27-year story. The more revealing measure is the distance between 1999 and today. The public conversation around preventive healthcare, natural healing, yoga, nutrition and lifestyle management has changed considerably. Yet the basic challenge remains: knowing what may support better health and consistently making those choices part of everyday life are two different things. That gap has remained central to Khatri's work throughout.
Her 27-year journey is therefore not simply the story of building an institution or receiving professional recognition. It is a record of staying committed to naturopathy as public understanding of wellness evolved, while gradually expanding her role from professional practice to institution-building, awareness and social wellness initiatives.
The recognition came later. The foundation was built much earlier, through years of professional work, public interaction, persistence and the belief that conversations about health are most valuable when they begin before illness becomes the centre of a person's life. For Gurumaa Yogita Khatri, that work began in 1999, and twenty-seven years later, it continues to be defined by the same underlying idea: better health begins with awareness, responsible choices and a willingness to take preventive healthcare seriously.
