NEW DELHI: Months after defeating the BJP in the West Bengal assembly elections in May, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee will be making her first move to reach out to people beyond the state on July 21.
July 21 is commemorated as Martyr’s Day by TMC to remember the 13 people who were killed in police firing in Kolkata during a Youth Congress rally in 1993. The rally was led by Banerjee who was then the leader of the Youth Congress wing in the state.
Banerjee’s July 21 speech will be delivered virtually through large video screens as the Covid pandemic has prevented a rally on the ground. However, for the first time, Mamata will be addressing people of several other states, possibly with an eye on the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
The rally will be broadcast in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Tripura, Assam, among others.
The high-pitched battle for Bengal last March-April had turned the campaign for the assembly polls in the state into a (Narendra) Modi versus Mamata (Banerjee) contest.
The pitched battle had also seen other opposition leaders from different states coming out in Mamata’s support during her election campaigns.
Since her victory for a third term as chief minister, the TMC chief has been hailed as a significant opposition leader who could play a crucial part in the parliamentary elections slated for 2024.
The TMC has planned to set up giant screens outside its offices in some states, including Uttar Pradesh and Tripura, to beam Mamata Banerjee’s address.
“This time, the event will be screened on giant screens at TMC’s office in Delhi. Our party MPs will be present there as Parliament session will begin on July 19. Our party supporters in Delhi will campaign in Delhi, highlighting the event,” said Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy.
“Everyone in India knows that Mamata Banerjee stands for development and people want to hear her as everyone is aware that she is the only one who can defeat the BJP,” said senior Lok Sabha MP Saugata Roy. Clearly, this move is meant to popularise TMC beyond Bengal ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha election.
With TMC also planning to venture out to some states other than Bengal, Banerjee’s address is meant to send out a message to people in those states.
“By organising the virtual event in Delhi, we are going to deliver a message that the TMC’s presence will become prominent in the national politics in 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Besides, the northeast states like Tripura and Assam appear to be fertile ground for the party in the near future,” a TMC leader said.
