NEW DELHI: After remaining below 40k for three days cases again surged past that mark on Wednesday. This trend of low cases at the beginning of the week reaching the week’s peak value in the middle has been consistent for a while and could be linked to lower testing over the weekend. Overall, Wednesday saw 41,816 cases and 577 deaths which were lower than 45,555 cases and 632 deaths reported last Wednesday.
State-wise analysis of infections shows that 12 states and UTs saw a surge in cases while 25 reported fewer infections than last week. Lakshadweep on the other hand reported exactly the same number of cases. The increase is worrying for Kerala and the northeastern states. Although Kerala that reported 15,637 cases on Wednesday, the increase was only of 37 cases as compared to July 7. The day’s count, however, was higher than other days of the week when cases had decreased significantly.
While Kerala’s daily tally was the highest among states, Manipur saw the biggest jump in weekly cases. The state that reported 1,104 cases on Wednesday saw a jump of 344 in daily fresh infections as compared to last week. The day’s tally was also the state’s highest this year. Other states that saw an increase in cases on Wednesday as compared to last week were Mizoram, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Meghalaya, Nagaland and Sikkim.
