LUCKNOW: The anti-terrorist squad (ATS) of the Uttar Pradesh Police on Tuesday conducted searches at several locations in Kanpur where the arrested terror accused, Minaz Ahmad and Masiruddin, used to stay during their Kanpur visits.
The ATS detained five persons but let them off after questioning.
According to ATS officials, Minaz and Masiruddin were members of Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind, an auxiliary unit of al-qaida, and were planning blasts in the state around Independence Day.
Meanwhile, a five-member team from the special cell of the Delhi police also reached Lucknow late Tuesday nightto question the arrested suspects.
While senior ATS officials remained tight-lipped about the developments in Kanpur, sources privy to the investigation claimed that searches were conducted and five youths questioned. They said ATS was searching for Shakeel, an accomplice of the arrested terror accused.
Inspector general of police, ATS, GK Goswamy said: “It is a sensitive case and many things are yet to be verified before reaching any conclusion. We have got the remand of the arrested suspects and will confront them with the evidence we have gathered during the probe. So far, the arrested duo have denied visiting any foreign country or having a passport.”
An officer said so far no clear evidence had been found to establish how the arrested suspects managed to get the weapon and how and on whose instructions they made the improvised explosive device (IED) in the form of a pressure cooker bomb.
A team from the special cell of Delhi police landed in Lucknow Tuesday night and is expected to question the suspects on Wednesday reportedly about their links and associates in the national capital.
Last year, the special cell of the Delhi police had arrested a suspect, Yusuf Khan, and claimed that he was associated with ISIS and a lone wolf planning strikes in Delhi. The special cell had also raided his residence in Balrampur district of Uttar Pradesh and recovered two suicide vests with leather straps, 15kg explosives with trigger batteries stashed in metal boxes.
