NEW DELHI: External affairs minister S Jaishankar has stressed on settling conflict through political dialogue and respecting interests of all ethnic groups for peace in Afghanistan.
He was speaking at the SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organisation) meeting of foreign ministers in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. The meeting was also attended by foreign ministers of Russia, China, Pakistan and other SCO member states.
The world, region and the Afghan people all want the same end state – an independent, neutral, unified, peaceful, democratic and prosperous Afghanistan, Jaishankar said.
However he reminded that there are forces at work with a very different agenda. The world is against seizure of power by violence and force and will not legitimise such actions, he said. It was a tacit reference to the Taliban, who have wrested control of vast swathes of Afghan territory from government forces after the US pullout.
Jaishankar reminded that the new generation of Afghans has different expectations, and their future cannot be rooted in the past. He also spoke of an “acceptable compromise” that reflects Doha process, Moscow format and Istanbul process.
Several rounds of talks on the Afghan peace process, involving the Taliban, Afghan government officials and world leaders have been held in Doha, Moscow and Istanbul. However no concrete decision could be arrived at. Further talks are scheduled for later this month in Doha.
