GUWAHATI: The “encounter spree” in Assam continued unabated with another alleged drug peddler being shot and injured on Friday while trying to escape from police custody in Assam’s Morigaon district.
With Friday’s shooting incident, 34 people accused in different cases, including rape, murder, drug-peddling, cattle smuggling and dacoity, have been shot at by the police, with varying results, while trying to escape from custody. Of these 34 people, 19 were shot and injured and 15 died of gunshot wounds, including 10 militants of the Dimasa National Liberation Army, United People’s Revolutionary Front and National Liberation Front of Bodoland, in the past two months after the new government took over.
The government has also arrested around 1,800 people in connection with drug peddling. Two huge drug rackets were busted by the police in Karbi Anglong, where drugs valued at Rs 19 crore in the international market have been recovered in the past two months. Two drug peddlers from Manipur and two women from Tamil Nadu were arrested.
Apart from that, the government has been following a “zero-tolerance” policy against cattle smuggling in the state, with the police given a free hand to take action against cattle smugglers. Since May, 504 people have been arrested in connection with cattle smuggling, of whom four suffered bullet injuries while trying to escape. Most of the arrests were made in minoritydominated areas in western Assam, including Dhubri, which borders Bangladesh.
It is pertinent to mention that the state government tabled the Assam Cattle Preservation Bill on July 12, during the ongoing budget session of the Assam Assembly.
The opposition parties, including Congress and various other organisations, have slammed the government over the “encounters”, saying it indicates a dangerous future.
